How we make money

Three ways, and we would rather you knew all of them.

Advertising

Most pages carry adverts. Some are sold directly to brands whose products are
relevant to what you are looking at: a gluten free flour company against a
gluten free search. Others are filled by an ad network. Either way they are
labelled, they are kept away from the method so you are not hunting for step
four, and a Pro membership turns them off entirely.

Affiliate links

When you are missing an ingredient we will sometimes show you where to buy it.
If you buy through one of those links we earn a small commission, and you pay
exactly the same price you would have paid anyway. Those links carry a
sponsored attribute and pass through a redirect so we can count the clicks.

We do not choose which recipes to show you based on whether the ingredients
have affiliate links attached. The ranking is the ranking.

Sponsored recipes

Occasionally a brand pays for a recipe. When that happens it says paid
partnership
on the recipe, on the card in search results, and in the listing,
not in small print at the bottom. A sponsored recipe gets a modest boost in the
results, capped so that it can never outrank a recipe you can actually cook
tonight with what you have. A recipe you cannot make is a wasted impression for
everybody.

What we will not do

We will not sell your kitchen contents, your dietary requirements, or your email
address. Those are the three most commercially valuable things on this site and
they are the three we will not touch. Dietary requirements in particular are
health data, and treating them as an advertising signal to be traded is not a
line we are interested in crossing.

Advert targeting happens in our own database, against the filters you have
applied on the page you are looking at. It never leaves the server, and it is
not attached to you.
